The Last Big Step in Your Healing Journey

Survivors of child sexual abuse often struggle with a variety of illnesses caused by long-term stress (trauma), like eating disorders, autoimmune disease, allergies, thyroid conditions, etc.

Why is that?

After you begin to talk about the abuse, learn to express your feelings safely, and connect with your mind/body/spirit, it’s time to take the next step on your healing journey.

Your body absorbs more information than you’re consciously ready to receive.  You might not remember everything that happened to you.  But your body remembers.  It’s a storehouse for all the trauma and stress you’ve ever experienced.

Now that you’ve come this far on your healing journey, it’s time to acknowledge that stored trauma and release it.  This is the last big step, the “final frontier.”

Fortunately, you can heal your body without reliving those painful memories.  Tension is just energy.  It needs to be gently felt and released.  When that happens, the body is free to heal itself.  It will regenerate and replace stored trauma with feelings of love, safety, and acceptance.

Taking the last big step in the healing journey requires a loving approach to your body.  When you’re compassionate with your body, you’ll be compassionate with others.  When you’re gentle with your body, you’ll be gentle with others.

Love is a lifestyle choice, and it begins with how you treat your body.  Love for ourselves, love for others, love for God, God’s love for us.  This connection is all that truly matters in life.  Begin to experience it today.  It’s wonderful!

Heal Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

The first step on the healing journey for any survivor of child sexual abuse is to start talking about what happened to you.  Break the silence.  Ask for assistance, preferably from a therapist or coach, who can help you deal with the effects of trauma.  These professionals understand what you’re going through.

All the experts I’ve interviewed for my new Summit in January discuss this process, as well as how your body, mind, and spirit are intimately connected for healing.

It’s easy to focus on your mind when you’re dealing with trauma.  But the body is incredibly wise.  The body knows what you need to experience in order to heal.  It knows which layers of resistance you’re ready to break through to discover the “real” you.

As you work with a coach or therapist, you’ll learn how to befriend your body, mind, and spirit.  In the process, you’ll uncover your toxic beliefs and resistance.

Practicing mindfulness will help you dig deeper when you realize a layer of resistance has been triggered.  For example, suddenly you’ll notice you’re feeling something, thinking something, responding to something.  What is it???  Go after it like a detective, until you solve this mystery.

Learn to enjoy the “investigative” process.  It helps you befriend and release those uncomfortable parts of yourself stored as trauma in your body.

Practice working with your body in this way, rather than against it.  Your body has much wisdom to teach you.  It’s amazing what you’ll discover when you honor it and listen!

How to Make Your Healing Journey Easier

You know me.  I’m a spiritual person.  Believe it or not, the process of healing from child sexual abuse only deepened my faith.  Early in my healing journey I discovered a connection to God or a Higher Power just made the whole process easier.

Why?  Because healing can be messy.  There were many times when I was down on my knees, lost and confused, pleading with God and the angels for a little light at the end of the tunnel.

They never let me down.  Afterwards, I always felt better and could sense their support.  That pulled me out of whatever emotional muck I was wading through at the time.
All I had to do was hand the burden over to God and ask for help.  That’s it.  And that’s a good thing, because it’s all I could do.  Life was too hard on those days to do anything else.

Just think.  We can connect with a spiritual Source of support whenever we feel overwhelmed and alone.  Anytime.  Anyplace.
Wow!  Are we lucky people or what?

Spirituality is a big part of my coaching approach, too.  In my support groups and webinars I’m always talking about connecting to others and to a Power greater than ourselves.  Like I said, it makes your healing journey much easier.

God, Love, Father Sky, Universe, Spirit, Angels, Mother Nature.  It doesn’t matter what you call this Divine Energy.  It’s your safety net.  Use it when the going gets tough.  It’s there for YOU.  Always!

When Nothing Seems to Work, Do This!

Walk outside in the yard for a moment.  What do you see?

Trees, leaves, grass, soil, sun, clouds, sky.  No matter your spiritual path, whether you’re Buddhist, Christian, Native American, Taoist, Jewish, New Age, etc., you know the energy of the earth is spiritual.  The cleansing, healing energy of nature grounds and supports us.  Because we live on the earth, we are connected to it in a very special, spiritual way.

One of the most important things I do for my clients is to help them “reconnect.”  They had to disconnect from their bodies and emotions in order to survive the sexual abuse they suffered as children.  They had to cut themselves off from the people around them to be able to manage the truth of this painful crime committed against them.

Because disconnection is all they know, they continue to do it as adults.  But now this coping strategy no longer helps them.  Disconnection becomes toxic when you grow up and sabotages everything in your life.  Ouch!

To help my clients reconnect, we begin with their most basic connection: Nature.  I teach them how to connect with the earth and sky to pull this powerful, loving, compassionate, spiritual energy into themselves.

For some, the overwhelming support of this grounding energy feels awesomely good.  For others, it’s terrifying.  I understand.  At the beginning of my healing journey I resisted anything I didn’t understand, too.  But the more I practiced the more real it became.

Today, my connection to this natural, spiritual energy source is one of my most important self-care tools.  So don’t give up.  Keep trying this exercise until it feels good.  Trust me.  It’s worth it!
